WYCOMBE TRIAL ARSENAL DEFENDER
(Wednesday 15th August 2001) The hunt for a central defender at Wycombe goes on with the news that former Arsenal trainee Lee Canoville has been taken on trial. The 20 year old played ninety minutes for Wycombe in a reserve game at Swindon on Wednesday afternoon (15th August) and did enough to suggest he could in with a chance of contract. At 6'1" and a 'No.1' haircut, he also looks the part too! Ealing born Canoville signed pro for Arsenal in the summer of 1997 having been a graduate of the FA school at Lilleshalle where he gained England U16 international honours. He was a regular in The Gunners 1998 FA Premier Youth championship winning team, and also played in the 1998 Southern Junior Floodlit Cup winning team. However, his First Team opportunities amongst the Highbury superstars were limted, making just one appearance when he came on for the final sixteen minutes of the Third Round Worthington Cup tie with Ipswich last November. Later in the season he spent a short spell on loan at Northampton Town, making two appearances for The Cobblers in Division Two. The news about Canoville comes after another Wycombe target, Bohemian defender Shaun Maher, looks set to move to Luton Town. The 23 year old turned down a £1,000 week deal with 'Bohs' according to The Times and with Luton boss, Joe Kinnear, tipping him for International honours it looks like destination Kenilworth Road. Earlier this week there were reports of a move to bring Hibernian defender Martin McIntosh to Adams Park but Wycombe have since been beaten to the punch by First Division Rotherham.
