SANCH - I WANT TO WIN EVERYGAME
(Wednesday 14th November 2001)
Lawrie SanchezLawrie Sanchez has insisted that Wycombe will be taking the FA Cup very seriously again this season. The Wycombe boss responded to comments earlier in the season by Steve Brown that Wycombe players may choose to 'opt out of the cup'. Sanchez said "I want to win every game we play, whether it's the Worthington Cup, FA Cup or LDV. I do not send out a team saying 'we go out and lose that game' "
Brown was writing in his regular column in the Bucks Free Press back in August when he said "Last year we were doing well in the league until the cup run came along. Maybe we should do a Man United and opt out of the cup. I think most of the players want to." Brown added "We know we aren't going to surpass what we did last year and we don't want anything to distract us from our aim of promotion"
Now just days away from the First Round encounter with Hayes, Wanderers are sitting on the same points total of 29 as at the same stage last season. However, after overcoming Harrow Borough in the First Round and consequently going onto to the semi-finals, Sanchez's injury torn side were almost sucked into a relegation battle.
Brown's comments may have been tongue in cheek but Sanchez, speaking at a Supporters forum in September, said "What I think his point was, that we played 17 cup games last season and got to the semi-final of the FA Cup. With the greatest will in the world I think it might be under the next manager before we get to the semi-final of the FA Cup again"
Sanchez also believes that the extra sponsorship money on offer this season will force many Division One and Premier League sides to take the competition more seriously. Wycombe are already set to pick up over £100,000 for media rights from the tie with Hayes and will pocket a further £20,000 should they progress to the Second Round. With the national press focussed in on Wycombe, thanks to the exploits of the 2000/2001, there would then be every opportunity of more cash coming from further TV and radio deals. That alone should be enough incentive to avoid the potential embarrassment of going out to non-League opposition.
Sanchez concluded in his programme notes against Peterborough "If our approach is right and we are professional on the day then we should reach round two but it will be a hard game with many a twist and turn no doubt"
