SANCH ON QPR-DONS MERGER
(Thursday 10th May 2001)
WimbledonLawrie Sanchez predicted the suggested merger between his former club Wimbledon and Queens Park Rangers would fail. Sanchez was speaking just days before the idea was scrapped by chiefs at both clubs followed outcry from supporters' group's.

Speaking to the national media, Sanchez said "The first thing they said is they are going to talk to fans and it's going to be the fans decision. If that's the case then we know what the decision will be"

QPR Sanchez, who has been linked to the Manager's postion at both Club's within the last twelve months, added "When any teams have tried to merge before, the fans have always been against it, no matter what the economic or financial situation is at the Club"
Rangers, who are in serious financial problems and under administration, issued a statement that backed up this theory, saying "Although the proposal had some financial and theoretical merit, the strength of feeling from supporters to maintain the QPR identity and history was overwhelming. Had it gone ahead it would have alienated, perhaps irrevocably, a large section of supporters without whom the club could not survive."

Wycombe will play QPR for the first time in competitive football next season following The R's relegation to Division Two.
