Background:
The signing of released teenage Norwich City midfielder Anis Mehmeti was announced by Wycombe Wanderers on 29th September 2020 as part of a quartet of players brought in to compliment the launch of the 'B' team at Adams Park. The other three players signed at the time were Andre Burley, Andron Georgiou and Malachi Linton. All four had played for Wanderers in a low-key pre-season friendly at Chesham United on 11 September 2020.

19 years old at the time of signing of Wycombe, he had previously played as a schoolboy for Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, before joining Norwich City in 2017. In the summer of 2019 he signed a contract extension with The Canaries until June 2020, by which time he had gained Under-19 honours for the Albanian national side.

In November 2019 he was loaned move to Essex Senior League side Woodford Town. However, having scored twice in 14 League appearances for Woodford he returned to Carrow Road in March 2020 when the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was subsequently released by a then relegated from the Premier League Norwich in the summer of 2020.

On 17 October 2020 he was given his senior debut when he appeared as substitute for Wycombe in the 2-1 home defeat to Millwall at Adams Park - thus becoming the first player born in the 2000's to represent Wanderers in a senior competitive match. He made his first start in the Champsionship match at Nottingham Forest on 7 November 2020. On 19 December 2020 he scored his first goal in senior football when he netted a late equaliser against Queens Park Rangers at Adams Park.

On 30th November 2021 the Club announced that Mehmeti has signed a new deal with Wanderers, running until June 2024. Commenting on the news, Wycombe Manager, Gareth Ainsworth said: "Anis is a special player with massive potential, and we’re delighted that he’ll be continuing to develop his game with us here at Wycombe Wanderers. When [the owners] backed us to launch a development squad programme just over a year ago, it was an ideal platform for us to scout players like Anis, who’d lost his way a little bit after leaving Norwich’s academy and falling into non-league, and bring them here to do everything we can to get the best out of them. We feel like we’re achieving that with Anis, and a great deal of credit has to go to Sam Grace, the rest of my staff, our senior players for mentoring him along the way, but also to Anis himself, for getting his head down, working hard and earning the right to launch what we believe will be a really successful career in the EFL. I know the fans will be excited by this news and it’s another statement of our intent to build – and keep – the strongest squad possible to achieve our aim of returning to the Championship and staying there."

Mehmeti finished the 2021/23 campaign with 7 goals in 32 League appearances for Wanderers but had already equalled that scoring record by November of the following season and his performances were gaining more traction from the media - including netting in a live TV game with Portsmouth on 4th December. In an interview following that match, Wycombe Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: "What he has is ridiculous and I know it’s something that I cannot coach, but I can help him get into the positions in which he can receive the ball and hopefully do some magic.". Ainsworth then jested about the price tag on the player's head, with the January 2023 transfer window approaching: "And if anyone wants to put £5m, £6m, or £7m in then we might consider letting him go. But hopefully we can keep him in January."

Having celebrated his 22nd birthday on 9 January 2023, Mehmeti went on to assist and score in a 2-0 midweek victory over Oxford United at Adams Park on 24 January 2023. Then late in the evening of 30 January 2023 it was revealed by a national newspaper journalist that Mehmeti had agreed a deal with Championship side Bristol City and would be attending a medical the following day to complete the deal. It was understood that the offer from Bristol City activated a clause in the player's contract that any offer of £1m or over would be accepted by Wycombe.

At 4pm on 31 January 2023 the move to Bristol City was officially confimred, in a deal described as a 'club record'. Commenting on the news, Gareth Ainsworth said: "It’s a bittersweet day for us, losing an influential player from the team, and a fantastic young lad from our club, but it’s also a moment of real pride for everyone involved in Anis’s development at Wycombe Wanderers. Rob and Pete Couhig backed us to launch this development squad programme and invest in bringing players like Anis to the club – players with raw talent and the potential to go on to make a success of themselves in the game. The team here deserve all the plaudits for nurturing his ability and taking this player from non-league to becoming this club’s record transfer. We didn’t want to lose him, but Bristol City have matched his asking price and we can’t stand in his way." The Wycombe Manager added: "We’ll be following Anis’s career closely and wishing him every success for the future, and I know that he’s destined for big things in the game if he keeps working hard. For us at Wycombe, we’ve been here before, seeing important players progress on to other clubs, and we will continue to keep building this squad in the best way possible to bring us success."

Despite the deal being described as a 'record' one for Wycombe Wanderers, the actual figure remained undisclosed at the time of the deal but is expected to be in the region of £1m. The press release from the Club also stated: "The deal includes the potential for future payments depending on various landmarks being reached in Anis’s career."
