The Club announced the signing of 33-year-old released Reading attacking winger Garath McCleary on 4th November 2020 in a deal running until the end of the 2020/21 season. The former Nottingham Forest player was released by The Royals at the end of the 2019/20 campaign having spent 8 years at The Championship club. The Oxford born player arrived at Adams Park with 24 international caps for Jamaica to his name, having started his football career in non-League football with Oxford City, Slough Town and Bromley. He made his Football League debut in 2008 for Nottingham Forest and went on the make over 100 First Team apps in a four year spell before a move to then Premier League Reading in the May 2012.

Commenting on the deal, Wycombe Wanderers Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: Garath has terrific experience playing at this level and Im delighted to bring him here to give us another option going forward. Hes very quick and direct and will suit the way we play. Hes been without a club since the summer but kept himself fit and sharp so we hope to be able to bring him into a matchday squad very soon and Im looking forward to seeing him in action.

At the end of January 2021, the Club announced McCleary had signed an extended deal 'until next year and beyond'. This was first assumed at the time as being until June 2023 but the Club confirmed in May 2023 that the contract extended until at least June 2024.

On Thursday 30th May 2024, following another season where McCleary was an integral part of the Wanderers squad, it was announced that he had agreed a further one year extension to his contract. He commented at the time: "The gaffer (Matt Bloomfield) has been brilliant, and so have all the fans and people behind the scenes. I'm just happy to be here."
