2023/2024 Wycombe Wanderers - - - -
Background:
Wycombe Wanderers confirmed on 31st January 2024 the signing of defensive midfielder Matt Butcher on a free from Championship side Plymouth Argyle. The 26-year-old, a former member of the youth system at Bournemouth, featured heavily in Argyle's League One promotion squad in the 2022/23 season but had less chances following their rise to the second tier. He joined Wanderers on an undisclosed length contract and was allocated No.8 in the squad for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.

His time at Bournemouth saw him make two First Team appearances as teenager (in the League Cup and FA Cup) before various loan spells with non-League clubs, Gosport Borough, Poole Town and Woking. In August 2016 he joined League Two Yeovil Town on a six-month deal, making his Football League debut on 6th August 2016 as a substitute versus Notts County. The loan was later extended until the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

After more than two years with First Team experience, on 31st January 2020 he signed for Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone on a six-month loan - making six League appearances before the end of the Covid effected season. After his release from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020, in August 2020 he signed a two-year deal with Accrington Stanley - racking up 85 appearances in his time in Lancashire before opting after failing to agree new terms with Stanley. During his time with Stanley he netted a late winner in their 2-1 victory at Adams Park iN August 2021.

He would sign a two-year deal with Plymouth Argyle in June 2022, making 40 League appearances for The Pligrims as they gained promotion to the Championship. After making 15 appearances for Argyle in the second-tier (12 from the bench) he was released from his contract on 31 January 2024 in order to 'pursue opportunities elsewhere'. Later the same day, his move to Wycombe Wanderers was announced.

Commenting on his move to Wycombe, he said: "With the success we had last year [at Plymouth], I was itching to continue that but obviously didn't play a great deal at the start of the season. That was on my mind after playing so much [the previous season] and wanted to come to a place where it was a similar sort of feeling, with a similar sort of people, and the togetherness and group ethic is very similar. That was a massive driving force in terms of me joining and hopefully we can climb the table before the end of the season."
